Getting Started On The Final Paper

Here is a useful link for the final paper. It includes lots of general information about Iraq and most importantly, an English version of the new Iraqi constitution. It also has links to the CIA world fact book entry on Iraq and information about the different political parties there.

This is an example of the kinds of postings you need to do every week in your blog. Post a URL to a website or article that you will use in your bibliography. Describe the resource, tell us what is there, and let us know how you will use it. Start commenting on other students' postings as well: give them suggestions for further research or let them know if you have information or resources that will help them with their paper.

Blogger Help : What is BlogThis! ?

Blogger Help : What is BlogThis! ? This is a handy tool for your research. While you are looking at articles on the internet, you can use the "BlogThis" feature to make posting your research to your blog easier. Remember that if you use this, you should remember to type a description of the URL into the posting ("Blog This" makes that easy).

Eng. 2 -- Final Paper (#4)

You have just been appointed special constitutional advisor to the president of Iraq. Write an 8 to 10 page paper addressing your broader vision of the individual's relation to the state. Your paper should address the following questions:

  • What kind of government should be in Iraq and why?
  • What do you think should be included in their constitution?
  • What special problems do they have that a constitution might solve?
  • Have we solved similar problems?
  • What about other countries in the Middle East?

Your paper should include research from Iraqi and/or Middle Eastern history, the LATEST news from Iraq, our constitution and history (for example and comparison). You will need at least four significantly relevant academic resources for this paper. You will probably use other resources too (online encyclopedias, editorials, interviews with other teachers or relatives, etc.), but you must include four academic resources as well.

You will all be writing about the same general idea: the individual's relationship to the state, but with a different topic emphasis. Topics that you may want to consider include universal sufferage, women's rights, religious freedom, civil war, the Bill of Rights, the structure of government, multi-party politics, etc.

PLEASE NOTE: It will be very important that you keep up with the blogs because your weekly homework assignment will be to share your research on the blog.

The paper will include a cover sheet, a formal outline, and a work cited list. Only papers following the MLA format will be accepted. Take advantage of peer review and tutoring because there are no rewrites. I do not accept late papers for this final assignment.

Eng. 2 -- 3rd Paper Assignment

Is Flag Burning Free Speech?

In this assignment, you have just been recommended to an appointment to the Supreme Court of the U.S. Before appointing you, the President wants a position paper describing your views on free speech. You will use a particular case (Texas v. Johnson) and its details to discuss your broader vision of free speech. Is flag burning free speech? Are all acts free speech? Is all speech protected speech?

1. Read the hand-out of Texas v. Johnson. (You may want to go online and read the whole decision.)
2. Read some of the quoted precedent cases such as

  • Spence v. Washington
  • Street v. New York
  • Schact v. United States
  • AND OTHERS – do not limit your research to just these cases.

3. Take a position on the issue.

4. Decide which cases best support your position.

5. In a four to six page paper, use precedent cases and any other reference materials, articles, or documents (such as the Constitution) to make your case.

For Section 2505

In this week's posting, take a look at http://www.MLA.org, http://citationmachine.net, or http://owl.english.purdue.edu and write up an evaluation of the resource. A superior posting would be one that also included a link to a grammar or writing resource from the internet that you found useful. Also, there are pictures at http://geocities.com/geoffcain/hartnell/eng2/2505/ Clicking on a picture will take you to that person's blog...

WELCOME! This is the place!

This blog will be used for discussions of critical thinking, current events, grammar, and writing. It can also be used for general discussions about the class. Students will be using a journal for Eng. 2. The journal will be a blog (like this one) of your response to our readings and issues in the daily news. Instructions on how to set up and use a blog will be given in class. Each week you will write in your blog and comment on the blog of one other person (a different person each week).

Follow the News

Each week I would like you to take one news story about an issue discussed in class and find two different takes on the same issue. For instance, if a story comes up on something related to the death penalty, look at the story in two different news sources (e.g. CNN and the Washington Post). Comment in your blog about the differences in these sources.
