Getting Started On The Final Paper

Here is a useful link for the final paper. It includes lots of general information about Iraq and most importantly, an English version of the new Iraqi constitution. It also has links to the CIA world fact book entry on Iraq and information about the different political parties there.

This is an example of the kinds of postings you need to do every week in your blog. Post a URL to a website or article that you will use in your bibliography. Describe the resource, tell us what is there, and let us know how you will use it. Start commenting on other students' postings as well: give them suggestions for further research or let them know if you have information or resources that will help them with their paper.

Eng. 2 -- Final Paper (#4)

You have just been appointed special constitutional advisor to the president of Iraq. Write an 8 to 10 page paper addressing your broader vision of the individual's relation to the state. Your paper should address the following questions:

  • What kind of government should be in Iraq and why?
  • What do you think should be included in their constitution?
  • What special problems do they have that a constitution might solve?
  • Have we solved similar problems?
  • What about other countries in the Middle East?

Your paper should include research from Iraqi and/or Middle Eastern history, the LATEST news from Iraq, our constitution and history (for example and comparison). You will need at least four significantly relevant academic resources for this paper. You will probably use other resources too (online encyclopedias, editorials, interviews with other teachers or relatives, etc.), but you must include four academic resources as well.

You will all be writing about the same general idea: the individual's relationship to the state, but with a different topic emphasis. Topics that you may want to consider include universal sufferage, women's rights, religious freedom, civil war, the Bill of Rights, the structure of government, multi-party politics, etc.

PLEASE NOTE: It will be very important that you keep up with the blogs because your weekly homework assignment will be to share your research on the blog.

The paper will include a cover sheet, a formal outline, and a work cited list. Only papers following the MLA format will be accepted. Take advantage of peer review and tutoring because there are no rewrites. I do not accept late papers for this final assignment.
